Type 3 Computer Resources

The Type 3 computer, first seen in the episode "The Conscience of the King," is arguably the most unique of the original series computer props. The clear cylinders, multi-color grid, and odd shape will catch the viewer's eye in any scene it appears. The prop was redressed in several episodes, giving us some variations to choose from when building a replica of this interesting prop..

Files for Laser Cutting

A set of free Adobe Illustrator files for laser cutting MDF parts for the chassis and panels is currently in development.

Electronics

An electronics kit for the Type 3 computer is currently in development and will be available for purchase soon. This kit promises to be the most comprehensive electronics package available for this prop, and incorporates your favorite sound effects from the series.

The electronics kit will NOT include push buttons or toggle switches, so please reference the sections below about obtaining the necessary hardware.

Push Buttons

The correct push buttons for the Type 3 computer are Edwards Signaling Model 821 push buttons. These are extremely hard to find these days, so you will probably want to seek out alternatives.

Grid [Alpha Version]

The grid held between the two cylinders was made from a ceiling louver with colored resin poured into the louver cells. If you are unable to find the correct ceiling louver, or if you don't have the setup to deal with resin, then consider using a 3D printed grid and laser cut acrylic pieces to fill in the cells.

Alternative

Type 3 Grid STL File

The Etsy store DelviesPlastics can supply acrylic pieces for the grid cells. These are .25" thick, so you need two pieces for each cell since the grid is .5" thick. The quantities listed below take this into account, and include extras of each color in case they are needed. Contact the store and request a custom order. Each piece should be .5" x .5" and .25" thick.

  • 28x 2423 clear red
  • 22x 2069 clear blue
  • 34x 2208 clear yellow
  • 58x clear

Graphics

The red/green/yellow graphics seen on the Type 3 computer were made from lighting gels.

An alternative solution is to have the graphics printed by an online printing company as a backlit graphic. The graphic will have a backing layer of diffusion material to reduce LED hot spots. Below are links to download the graphic as a jpg, as well as a link to the online printing company. You want to specify the option "Backlit Film" when placing your order.
